There is currently no specific tax for photovoltaic systems. However, there are two taxes that have to be paid. On the one hand, there is VAT, which is a tax associated with the purchase of a product or service. At present, 21% VAT must be paid when the installation is carried out, but in some specific cases, such as in construction or renovation work on houses and in renovation work, 10% VAT may be applied. On the other hand, in some autonomous communities, the ICIO (Impuesto de Construcciones, Instalaciones y Obras) must be paid in order to process the building permit. Each municipality determines the percentage of the cost of the work, which is usually between 1% and 5%. Nowadays, many Spanish municipalities are offering a rebate of up to 95% on this tax.
